Pass with 55% (GEN)/ 50% (SC/ST) aggregate marks in B.Sc. Microbiology/ Biotechnology / B.Sc. Medical or Major in Microbiology.

Overview

M.Sc. Microbiology involves an advanced study of the microbial world around us. The course focuses on detailed study of microorganisms and their application in the various fields like medical, food, industrial and agriculture. The program seeks to impart advanced lessons in the biological process especially the disease causing microbial world and their diagnostics. Microbiology is also used to study the biological features of the microbes and modify techniques to be used in food industry using beneficial microorganisms. Similarly, Microbiology is used to develop organic fertilizers and pesticides for the agricultural development. Graduates of the course are able to conduct a detailed study of microorganisms using scientific tools such as microscopes, genetics and culture.

Microbiology course material can be classified into two sections: the theory section and the practical section. In the theory section, students will have to deal with subjects related to Microbiology as well as basic technology concepts. The practical section is also very important. Students will have to spend a good amount of time in the laboratory, performing practical lessons as well as lab training. The aspiring candidates need to have a scientific aptitude and keen interest in biological sciences and are ideally suited for the course. Pupils, who possess an analytical mind, have problem-solving skills, and proficiency with the use of computers are considered to be idle for this program.

So, there is a huge demand for Microbiology graduates these days. Successful graduates of the course are lucratively hired in both private and government sectors. Some prominent industries where Microbiology professionals may find jobs are Pharmaceuticals Industry, Healthcare sector, Chemical Industry, and Research & Development sector. Here is a list of some of the job positions that a successful post-graduate in M.Sc. Microbiology can pursue: • Research Associate • Research Scientist • Product Analyst • Microbiologist. Initial average annual salary ranges between INR 3.5 and 9 Lacs, depending upon the candidate’s expertise in the field. If you want to pursue higher education after M.Sc. Microbiology, then you can go in for the specialized certificate courses. M.Sc. course will take two years to complete. After completing M.Sc. course, one can pursue Ph.D. also.
