Pass with 50% (GEN)/ 45% (SC/ST) aggregate marks in 10+2 or equivalent (with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics /Biology).

Overview

B. Sc. in Forensic Science offers the study of scientific applications and knowledge that helps in the investigation of crimes. Forensic Sciences includes essential components such as Forensic Pathology, Psychiatry, Psychology, Forensic Medicine and Odontology (Dentistry). It is chiefly laboratory-based science consisting of related elements of Chemistry, Biology, Toxicology, Ballistics, the Science of Fingerprinting, Questioned Documents and Impressions. This program consists of both classroom lectures and practical training sessions. The discipline involves crime- scene investigation including fire explosion scenes and drug laboratories. The subject applies scientific knowledge to aid in the administration of justice and has no boundaries as far as subjects are concerned. It makes use of all faculties of science, such as Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Medicine among others. Such professionals generally work in a lab and the deduced results and findings are then used to help solve cases and catch criminals. At their respective laboratories, they perform the following functions: -Keep a record of all the evidence collected -Analyze the evidence using scientific methods and equipment -Arrive at conclusions after analyzing -Prepare reports related to their findings Technical skill can be developed through the curriculum. However, intelligence and aptitude required in solving a crime by viewing it from various angles need to be developed by the student through practical exposure. Good academic skills with fundamental knowledge of various fields of science are necessary.

There are endless opportunities in this field because the reckless amount of crimes is happening in our society. So, job opportunities in the field of forensic science are also endless. Forensic experts are hired by private investigation agencies, security agencies, consultancies, law firms and detective agencies. If you want to be self-employed, you may start your own agency or consultancy service. Whereas in the Government sector, Police Department, Government Forensic Laboratories, Income Tax Department, Commercial Tax Department, Crime Branch, Armed Forces, Government Hospitals, Government Banks, Finance Institutes etc. hire forensic science graduates. Here is a list of some of the job positions that a B.Sc. Forensic Science graduate can apply for: Crime Laboratory Analyst Forensic Serologist Forensic Architect Forensic Odontologist Forensic Psychiatrist Forensic Toxicologist Forensic Engineer A trained forensic scientist may be hired by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) & Intelligence Bureau (IB). You can also work as a freelancer forensic scientist. You can also work as a legal counsellor after gaining experience as a Forensic Scientist. The average annual salary offered in the country to successful graduates of the course lies between INR 1 and 5 lacs. Successful graduates can also go in for higher education by pursuing M.Sc. Forensic Sciences, MD Forensic Science (after MBBS) or PhD (Research in the area of interest).
