Bachelors of Planning (B. Plan) is a four-year full time professional undergraduate level degree programme. The program aims to build in students competent business acumen through advanced study of general subjects such as Fundamentals of Urban and Regional Planning, Evolution of Aesthetics, Culture and Technology, Basic Architectural Design, Ecology, Environment and Resource Development and Management, later allowing them to specialize in a chosen area. The programme aims to optimum utilisation of resources available in front of him/her and creates a functional and comfortable environment using those resources, as also for pursuing advanced research in the discipline. The course’s curriculum encompasses both theoretical and practical components of the study. The planning study develops skills like designing, numeracy, drawing, computer-aided designing project, and management skills, hence candidates become able to solve problems in an analytical, logical way team working ability. The programme also develops knowledge, skills of writing and oral communication in various setting, decision making, adaptability and flexibility for dealing with an unexpected situation where necessary the ability to reflect on and improve professional performance. The chief objective of a planning professional is to formulate the most advantageous use of capital accessible in front of him/her. Planners are involved in devising, planning and production of human settlements, cities and towns. They are also involved in planning, design and making of services and facilities beneficial to the society, such as- transportation systems, drainage systems, sanitary systems, water supply systems etc. Professional planners also play a crucial role in shaping the urban environments – economically and environmentally, socially and culturally, thus having a significant impact on the factors that influence our lives.
Professionals can work as Urban Planner, Regional Planner, Project Planner, Design Architect, Interior Designer etc. Government job opportunities are also available for a planning graduates, some of them are Government Departments related to Urban and Town planning, Government-operated Housing schemes, Government Transportation Projects (Highways, Railways and Metros etc), administration creation and rehabilitation projects, PWD employment posts, Municipal conglomerate job posts etc. Whereas in private sector, firms indulged in Construction, Architecture and Interior Designs, Public Structure Construction (PPP model- like roads and bridges etc), NGOs etc. often hire planning Bachelor of Planning professionals. Self-employment opportunities are also available for graduates from this field which include starting one’s own consultancy service. Planning professional’s work includes designing, planning, surveying, model making, cost estimation and project management which form an integral part of planning, to an extent, site visits, supervision and field trips also are involved in this profession. After completion of this course, candidates can also pursue the higher studies and do Master of Planning (M.Plan), or research-oriented work in their respective field.
